OUT & ABOUT OCTOBER 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — laurelmountainboro @ 1:24 am

October 2, 2008: I apologize for not posting in September. However, I was out of town from the first to the twenty-eighth, traveling up the New England coast by way of Philadelphia, and returning home by way of northern New York. I’m back now, and hope to keep this site up better than I have been doing…NOTE: It’s BEAR TIME! The first bear sighting I’ve heard about occurred last night. The O’Brien’s sensor light went on and Amy rolled over and saw a bear. Dan said it was a couple hundred pounds, with no tags. The bear bolted, he said. Amy said the bear returned. They have paw print smudges on their living room window. It’s time to TAKE YOUR BIRD FEEDERS INSIDE at night…There are four “for sale” signs at the front entrance to the borough, although one of the houses, on Maple Rd., has added a “SOLD” sign.

LIGONIER CALENDAR COVER PHOTOGRAPH

For those persons who wonder why I run about with a camera, I could say I was influenced by my father, a chief Naval photographer. However, since I didn’t know him as I grew up, he didn’t really influence me.

I can say it’s partly the rewards, which I received this year from Ligonier’s Chamber of Commerce. One of the photos I entered in their calendar contest became the cover photo of the 2009 calendar (http://www.flickr.com/photos/carolyncholland/2810322370/).

I am very pleased that the committed picked this picture. i hope you all enjoy it.

Even though on the surface it seems contrary to my nature, I like efficiency.

Thus, if someone else has created the same proverbial mouse trap that I plan on building, it’s nice to give them the credit, access their mouse trap and move on to either improve it or to create something else.

So it is with the Welcome Wagon category in this newsletter. Two very nice, appropriate, community web sites are available already. They are not limited to Laurel Mountain Borough or Laughlintown, but expand into the Ligonier region. To link to these sites makes great sense to me, and will save me from redundancy—from repeating the same task.

So it is that I will include the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce and Diane Cipa’s “LIGONIER LIVING” web site—http://www.ligonier.com/www.ligonierliving.blogspot.com —are included as a boost to the LMB newsletter. Click on these sites to learn about the Ligonier Valley—its people and its events.

LAUREL MOUNTAIN BOROUGH NEWSLETTER

OUT & ABOUT  AUGUST, 2008

August 30, 2008: Only two more days to swim! Take advantage of the pool…Will anyone challenge my record? I swam 35 double (70 single) widths of the pool in less than an hour. I hold the record…Just another note—check the 2009 Ligonier calendar. The cover photo was successfully submitted by yours truly.—click on these links to sneak a peek:

August 29, 2008: This day began with such inclement weather that I thought there would be no swimming. However, the day cleared up and residents enjoyed a beautiful time in the water. Unfortunately, I had other plans and couldn’t swim. Hopefully the weather will cooperate so that the pool can be used the last two days it will be open. If you haven’t been there show up these last days…The Labor Day Weekend has begun. Click on these two sites to read posts about labor: LABOR AND LABOR DAY and IN DEFENSE OF THE OLDER EMPLOYEE

August 27, 2008: School is in session. Drive carefully, and protect our children.

August 23, 2008: I heard through the grapevine that more than sixty persons attended the swim/picnic party sponsored by Laurel Mountain Park. Kudos to those who organized the successful event, and to mother nature for cooperating with beautiful weather. Unfortunately, my camera is in ill health and needs to be put to sleep. Thus, I have no photographs of the fun. Besides, I was having too much fun myself in the pool!

August 24, 2008: Residents walking dogs at the White Oak end of Walnut Road should be careful. A public comment at the borough meeting informed that a pit bull exited a home and attacked a dog being walked by a resident. The dog received injuries severe enough to need vetnarian care, and the dog’s owner needed stitches. The dog is quarantined until the 26th of August.

August 14, 2008: With the cooler weather this week, fewer swimmers are using the pool. Thanks to Dan for caring for the water quality, and the others for doing the administrative work…there are at least four residences for sale in the boro, two on Maple Road, one on White Oak Road and one on Beechwood Road. A fifth has been sold this summer.

August 6, 2008: The biggest news being talked about in the boro today is the robbery of the bank on route 30 in Laughlintown shortly after 9 a.m., and the windows being shot out at the Dollar Store in Ligonier (read: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribunereview/news/westmoreland/s_581538.html)…the gas company was called when three residents confirmed smelling gas this evening (and a fourth resident said he smelled at other times) on Walnut Rd. in front of the Park Shelter House. A representative arrived within an hour, checked the site and concluded that it was a miner leak. He said that the gas company would be here soon to correct it. The representative also checked a residence for gas leaks as a precaution.

August 4, 2008:   Leroy the yard butler lawn ornament, was discovered in a yard several doors down from his Maple Rd. home, where he sits on a post. Previously, Leroy’s neighbor, Kathy, had retrieved him from another neighbor’s yard, across the street from his home about ten days ago. Apparently, a community jokester is picking Leroy up in the dark of the night and taking him to decorate different yards in Laurel Mountain Borough.
The question is, where will Leroy visit next?
He can be returned to him home on Maple Road by his new host.

August 1, 2008  The boro will miss the former mayor, Jack, and his wife and family. Through the years Jack served the community in many ways. Their house is sold and the family moved to Ligonier.

LAUREL MOUNTAIN BOROUGH HISTORY  PART 1-E

In 1940, when the Park was pretty well built up, Lohr asked people to “buy him out,” said Foster. The sale, including the pool, tennis court and roads, created Laurel Park, Inc.

A small cottage on the corner of the recreation area was rented out by Laurel Park, Inc. for revenue, Kinsey said. This was the cottage Craig Miller’s family rented between 1949 and 1956. Now gone, Miller noted that the vestiges (more…)

OUT & ABOUT July 2008

Filed under: OUT & ABOUT — laurelmountainboro @ 2:07 am

JULY 12, 2008: If you heard bagpipes this evening, you weren’t hearing someone’s music turned up loud, nor were you imagining it. A piper played several selections at the Shelter House at the wedding reception for Michael and Sandra Holland Murawski. Welcome Michael to the community as he and Sandy begin their new life here. (Sandra has lived int eh borough since November 2000).

JULY 15, 2008:  An item from the June 21, 2008, Tribune-Review: Gregory R. Randall, 51, of 16 Locust Road, Laughlintown, by Ligonier borough police with luring a child to a motor vehicle and harassment for an incident at the Get-Go gasoline station on South Market Street. Charges with Unity District Judge Michael Mahady.

July 31, 2008: July is now done (at least it will be in 2 hours), and I realize I have been slack on posting this month. I apologize. With the wedding and other activities, I have been unable to keep up…The pool has been open and swimmers have been enjoying the cool water on the warm days…It will be open until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. Come for an early evening swim…The rains played havoc with the road work this month, as well as in June and May. Patience is needed on the part of the residents and council…See you in August!

OUT & ABOUT June 2008

Filed under: OUT & ABOUT — laurelmountainboro @ 4:25 am

JUNE 14, 2008 It’s been a while since I’ve posted on this site. Lots has happened. PENNDOT ditched State Road, and the roadwork inside the borough has finally been started, after being delayed by rain, rain and more rain—as it has been doing all evening…Check page 11 of the Ligonier Echo for an article headlined “Bear activity spotted in Laurel Mountain Borough”…In the “Looking Back” column in the same publication: 25 years ago June 15, 1983: Laurel Mountain Borough may sue Ligonier Township over back taxes and other disputed fees…An independent three-member commission was recently appointed to settle the “division of assets” dispute between the two municipalities…and 10 years ago June 11, 1998: The League of Women Voters in Westmoreland County held its selection of officers May 30 in Rector…Officers for the 1998-1999 year include…Ann Clark, finance chairman (the late Ann Clark lived in LMB)…The Beanery Writers Group met at the Holland residence on June 13…Ann on Hemlock Rd. volunteered her services at the Laughlintown Senior Center’s June chicken and biscuit dinner

OUT & ABOUT May 2008

Filed under: OUT & ABOUT — laurelmountainboro @ 2:32 pm

MAY 15, 2008: Just spotted another tree that fell, broken off in the middle of its height. It’s in a yard on Walnut Rd. near State Rd. Fortunately, the trees all missed houses…While walking Jordan to the bus this morning, I ran into Judith Barbaras walking her dog. They are visiting from Chicago. She told Jordan that she grew up here, and met the school bus just like Jordan did. She noted that it was a great place to grow up in, that for 15 cents a day one could spend their time at the pool.

MAY 14, 2008: The bear story continues. Amy across the street contacted me in mid morning to report that there was a bear in a tree (more…)
