J. Robert Appleby, 78, of Laughlintown, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. It was an ordinary Sunday; breakfast at Ruthie’s with his friends and then off to church to teach his Sunday school class. Two hours later, he was in an ambulance on his way to Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. He was born June 22, 1933, in Orange, N.J., a son of Phebe Jane McCarl Appleby and Harold Radcliff Appleby. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nelda Fischer Appleby; brother, Eugene (Myra) Appleby; sons, Bob (Kathy) and Edward (Natalie) Appleby; grandchildren, Jennifer Appleby West, Morgan Dieble, Lance, Patricia and John Appleby; and great-grandchildren, Oktober and Alexander. A private visitation will be held for the family. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Pioneer Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Kenyon officiating. Interment will follow in Ligonier Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Robert to Pioneer Presbyterian Church (PCA), 240 W. Main St., Ligonier, PA 15658.
